The past months have seen several exciting developments for Sandvik Mining and Construction

Sandvik Mining and Construction is one of the world’s leading providers of equipment and solutions for mineral-exploration, surface and underground mining, bulk-materials handling and environmental restoration. It also offers solutions for many applications in the construction industry, including surface rock excavation, tunnelling, demolition, recycling and road rehabilitation.

Sandvik Mining and Construction is a business area within the Sandvik Group, a global industrial concern with advanced products and world-leading positions in key areas. In 1997, the Sandvik Group acquired Tamrock. This together with Sandvik Rock Tools forms the business area of Sandvik Mining and Construction, which now employs approximately 16,800 men and women, and has operations in more than 130 countries. Annual sales in 2008 amounted to approximately SEK 38,700m.

When it comes to products, Sandvik Mining and Construction is a leading global supplier of machinery, cemented-carbide tools, service and technical solutions. This range of products includes rock tools, drilling rigs, loaders and trucks, crushing and screening machinery and bulk-materials handling systems. Every product is preceded by extensive research and development (R&D) and backed with application expertise and a worldwide service network offering on-site service, training and round-the-clock support.

The latter part of 2009 has seen some major global expansion for Sandvik Mining and Construction. For example, in September the company inaugurated its largest production facility to date. The new manufacturing facility is located in the Shanghai Jiading Industrial Zone in China, and has the capacity to produce most of the products in the Sandvik Mining and Construction product range. As are all major Sandvik facilities, the Jiading factory has the best production technology and is triple certified according to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18001.

Lars Josefsson, president of Sandvik Mining and Construction, commented: “This new facility shows our serious commitment to our customers, suppliers, distributors and personnel in Asia. Now we have an even better presence and can really create deep relationships and create the best solutions together. It has been a great achievement to finish this facility and get it operational in just one year and it will increase our manufacturing flexibility a great deal when it comes to capital equipment.”

Only a few days after this significant unveiling, and Sandvik Mining and Construction was again inaugurating a new facility – this time in Brazil. The new Brazilian manufacturing plant is located close to Belo Horizonte, and will mainly be used to manufacture components for conveyor systems. In addition to this, the facility will also be used to assemble conical and jaw crushers, vibrating screens, frames and drums for conveyor belts.

“This is in line with Sandvik Mining and Construction’s long term strategy of bringing value into our customers’ processes. With 50 per cent of our sales in the southern hemisphere it is a natural step to also set up manufacturing close to our customer base. It will increase the availability of our products and we will be able to serve our customer even better,” said Lars.

The development of these new plants is in line with Sandvik’s tradition of localisation, and its conviction that there can be no substitute for direct service and direct contact with customers. The company’s service-oriented, global organisation is well developed and it has more than 3500 service technicians located strategically around the world, all working for customers.

In addition to these new facilities, Sandvik Mining and Construction has also been involved in an exciting mine re-opening. The Sydvaranger Gruve open-pit iron-ore mine has been closed since 1997, but it has now been refurbished and is set to be reopened in October 2009. Sandvik was selected to supply three crushers, seven feeders and a complete new set of conveyor components to refurbish the old conveyor system. The three Sandvik CH870 cone crushers, one secondary and two tertiary crushers, have been installed where the former Symons 7’ crushers used to operate prior to the closure of the mine and have a capacity of 1325 tons.

Sandvik has vast experience in the modernisation of crusher stations throughout the world. There are numerous examples in which Sandvik equipment has been used in the upgrade of existing crushing plants, both those in operation and those that will be reopened, as was the case in Sydvaranger. In addition, Sandvik can offer a readily available supply and consignment stock of wear parts.

“It is incredibly stimulating to be involved in the reopening of this Norwegian industrial giant. This partnership not only encompasses the supply of high-quality products, but also what Sandvik represents in terms of collaboration and service,” commented Tollef Eliassen, customer segment manager for Sandvik Mining and Construction, Surface Mining, in Norway.

One of the products mentioned above, the Sandvik cone crusher, is just one of a multitude of products supplied by Sandvik. The cone crusher range features ukadvanced design, with high capacity and high reduction efficiency. With hydraulically adjusted CSS and automatic wear compensation, a choice of different crushing chambers and eccentric throws, and many other high-performance features, each model is versatile, user-friendly and highly productive.

To maintain its position as market leader and innovator means that Sandvik has to continually create and release new and improved products such as this. In October the company highlighted the global availability of its line of rotary drill pipe tools, which gives clients the ability to purchase all products involved in the drilling process from one supplier. Engineered to handle the demanding operational requirements of drilling hard rock and abrasive formations commonly found in surface mining drilling, the line is built to withstand extreme torsional and axial loads.

The company also announced the launch of the new Sandvik UH421, a crushing unit that has been designed for an interruption-free process, producing first-class material. One difference compared with the former, similar unit is that the screen is placed alongside of the unit, and has an optimal feed hopper. This means that the material is slowed down, and is well spread out by the time it reaches the screening media and that, all in all, the screening area is utilised better.

It is this type of continuous innovation that illustrates not only Sandvik Mining and Construction’s comprehensive understanding of customer needs, but also its ongoing commitment to addressing them long into the future.
